Seth Godin Doesn't Care Where John Wilson Is! · 28/05/07

I emailed Seth Godin (perennial bestselling author and self described “Change Agent”) about my friend, John Wilson, who is running a campaign to “find himself” in Google. Seth responded with a blog in which he calls the idea ‘silly’, which is a sort of surprising response from someone who seems to embrace “silly” ideas that don’t fit nicely into the status-quo — he has a book about purple cows and uses stick figures liberally to illustrate his points in his recent book, “The Dip”, for instance. Seth’s no dummy, though, and I recommend his blog to anyone. He’s also a really nice guy to take time out of his schedule to respond to random emails from fans with custom blog posts. =)

With that said, I don’t think there’s anything silly about being unfindable on the internet and wanting to change that. For some, not being findable on Google is a good thing; for others, it’s a distinct disadvantage. For a headier and broader look at the issue of findability, I recommend the slim and smart book, Ambient Findability, by Peter Morville.

My advice to you — if you don’t have a criminal record and support some level of personal transparency, go buy your domain name and start creating your own personal brand. If you’re, John Wilson, though, you’re going to have to try harder.
